Why is all Morinaga Silken Tofu made exclusively with Non-GMO soybeans and undergoing verification by the Non-GMO Project?
A GMO is a genetically modified organism (also called “genetically engineered”): a plant, animal, or micro-organism that has been engineered with DNA from other animals, plants, bacteria, or viruses. GMOs are developed through gene-splicing by biotechnologists and can cross natural species barriers, such as salmon with growth hormones and genes from other fish, or even fish genes in tomato. Some crops, including soybeans, are engineered to withstand heavy doses of herbicide meant to kill weeds and implanted with genes to resist insects or pathogens.
GMOs have been developed in hopes that their features will improve our food and increase yields to feed a growing population. However, neither the FDA, the Department of Agriculture (USDA), nor the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has done any long-term testing of the impact of GMOs on human health and the environment. It could take years for the effects of GMOs to become clear and many experts are concerned they may have unforeseen risks, such as insect resistance or the liberal spraying of herbicide-resistant GMOs leading to more pesticide in food. Furthermore, GM crops can be patented in the US, allowing corporations to require they be repurchased each year and take legal action against even accidental unauthorized hybrids. This disrupts traditional sustainable systems of seed-saving and farmer-participatory breeding, and makes them a crippling expense for third-world farmers. GMO foods are currently banned or restricted in nearly 50 countries, but GMOs have been in the US food system since 1996 and require no label. Right now over 90% of US-grown soy is GMO.
Like many of you, Morinaga is concerned about GMOs. That's why every package of Morinaga Silken Tofu is made only with Non-GMO soybeans.
We believe everyone deserves the choice to select non-GM foods, so if GMOs are not labeled, we think proven non-GMO options should be! For this reason we have partnered with the Non-GMO Project
, North America’s only independent verification for products made according to rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance. Our verified products
have been produced in compliance with the Non-GMO Project’s rigorous standards, including ongoing testing of all at-risk ingredients, facility inspections, and an annual audit to ensure the highest standard of GMO avoidance. (Look here
